Description

The 190 SL was first displayed as a show car in New York in 1954. A production version followed, at Geneva in 1955. At the time, it retailed for $3,998 with a soft top or $4,295 with the optional removable hardtop. Ultimately, 25,881 Mercedes-Benz 190 SLs were produced. That works out to 270 cars every month, with 70 percent being delivered to the U.S., which was close to the goal that New York importer Max Hoffman had promised Daimler-Benz executives. As the company’s first volume sports car, the 190 SL shared the 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine and running gear from the Type 180 sedan, while also offering similar styling to its big brother, the legendary 300 SL. The resemblance to the 300 SL coupe and roadster was certainly intentional, but new in 1955, the 190 SL was half the price. Mercedes-Benz followed the Austin-Healey/Triumph TR-series formula of the era by creating a new car using off-the-shelf components it had available from its other car lines. The 190 SL was produced from 1955 through 1963, with Mercedes-Benz building 25,881 units. It could reach a top speed of 110 mph, with a 0–60 mph time of 13.3 seconds, while also offering up to 26 mpg, the perfect combination for effortless touring. The example offered here comes from a very prestigious Southern California private collection and is in restored condition. Finished in the highly desirable color of Fire Engine Red with a Tan leather interior, and a Tan Cloth Convertible Top. The stunning paint highlights an arrow straight body, with tight panel gaps and excellent fitment. Chrome, glass, and stainless trim are all in beautiful condition. Currently fitted with Weber Carbs to replace the solex units for increased performance, the car runs and drives very well. The car also features period correct tires including the matching spare in the trunk. This is an excellent car for any collection. Please contact us for additional details.
